| Properties: | Beta-sitosterol is used for lowering cholesterol and easing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). A study published by the Lancet showed that men with BPH, who took beta-sitosterol, had significant improvements with urinary problems. Beta-sitosterol seems to reduce the cholesterol level in the prostate. Beta-sitosterol might also work through its anti-inflammatory activity. Regular intake of high levels of beta-sitosterol might also reduce blood cholesterol levels. The cholesterol lowering property of beta-sitosterol is the result of a lower absorption of cholesterol.
| | Description: | Beta-sitosterol is a phytosterols or plant sterol. The structure of beta-sitosterol is similar to that of cholesterol. Beta-sitosterol differs from cholesterol by the presence of an extra ethyl group.
|
| Distribution: | There are many plant sources of beta-sitosterol, but the most important are wheat germ, rice bran, peanuts, soybeans, pumpkin seeds and corn oil.
