Gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats ameliorated and healing effects of resveratrol.
Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin. 2007 January;30(1):79-83
Gentamicin is an antibiotic which can also be highly toxic on the kidney (nephrotoxic). The aim of this study was to determine the protective effect of resveratrol on gentamicin toxicity. The study was carried out on rats which were treated with gentamicin and resveratrol for 6 days. The urine, blood samples, tissue samples and kidney were analyzed. The researchers found that resveratrol significantly reduced urea and creatinine levels in the urine, lipid peroxidation and catalase level. Examination of the kidneys showed that resveratrol reduced tubular damage. They concluded that resveratrol has a protective effect against gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity, lipid peroxidation and cellular damage in rats.
