Resveratrol may increase life span

Resveratrol improves health and survival of mice on a high-calorie diet.
Nature. 2006 Nov 16;444(7117):337-42. 2006 November 1
Studies show that resveratrol extends the lifespan of diverse animal species including yeasts, nematodes and fruit flies. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster. Lifespan extension seems to dependent on sirtuins, which are enzymes that may play a key role in responses to stresses and may be responsible for the lifespan-extending effects of calorie restriction. This study shows that resveratrol changes the biological activities of the mice on a high-calorie diet towards those of mice on a standard diet and significantly increases their survival. The researchers concluded that resveratrol may have a potential as agent to treat obesity-related disorders and to retard ageing.
