Resveratrol affords protection against peroxynitrite-mediated endothelial cell death: A role for intracellular glutathione. Chemico-Biological Interactions. 2006 December 15;164(3):157-66 Oxidants such as nitrite radicals are the main cause for the development of atherosclerosis is. Glutathione is an antioxidant produced by cells and acts as scavenger of nitrite radical. This study investigated the protective effect of the pre-treatment of endothelial cells with the phytochemical resveratrol on the cell damage caused by nitrite radicals. The researchers found that the pre-treatment of the cells with resveratrol in less cell damage. This effect was only observed for the highest resveratrol concentration tested.
Protective effect of resveratrol against oxidative damage of UVA irradiated HaCaT cells.
Zhong Nan Da Xue Xue Bao Yi Xue Ban. 2006 October;31(5):635-9 The aim of this study was to determine the potential protective effects of resveratrol on human keratinocyte cells, which were exposed to UVA radiation. The researchers found that resveratrol enhanced the proliferation activity of the cells and increased the acivity of superoxide dismutase (important antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes superoxide) and glutathione peroxidase (antioxidant enzyme that protects the cells from oxidative damage). They also found that resveratrol reduced maleic dialdehyde levels, indicating reduced levels of lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress. Microscopic evaluation revealed that resveratrol protected the ultrastructure of the skin cells.
Comparative study of natural antioxidants - curcumin, resveratrol and melatonin - in cadmium-induced oxidative damage in mice. Toxicology. 2006 August 15;225(2-3):150-6 The aims of this study was to determine the protective effects of the antioxidants resveratrol, melatonin and curcumin on oxidative damage caused by cadmium administration. Mice were pre-treated for 3 days with resveratrol, melatonin and curcumin followed by the administration of cadmium. Different indicators of oxidative damage, such as lipid peroxidation, gluthione, glutathione peroxidase and catalase were measured. All three antioxidants caused a reversal of the cadmium-induced lipid peroxidation and inhibition of glutathione peroxidase. Only resveratrol was effective against cadmium-induced inhibition of catalase activity. The antioxidants had no effect on glutathione levels. They concluded that the antioxidants curcumin, resveratrol and melatonin can protect against the oxidative damage caused by cadmium.
