Guarana as antioxidant

Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of ethanol extract from Paullinia cupana Mart.
Journal of Ethnopharmacology. 2005 October 31;102(1):32-6
This study investigated the antimicrobial properties of guarana extract against different strains of bacteria. They found that the extract showed significant antibacterial effect against many bacteria but especially against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia coli. They also tested the antioxidant activity of guarana extract by using the malonyldialdehyde test and found that the extract reduce lipid peroxidation in a dose dependent manner.

Antioxidant capacity and in vitro prevention of dental plaque formation by extracts and condensed tannins of Paullinia cupana.
Molecules 2007; 12(8):1950-63
The researchers first quantified the antioxidants present in different types of guarana extracts. They found the following phytochemicals: caffeine, catechin, epicatechin, ent-epicatechin and different procyanidins. The antioxidant capacity was determined with the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) reduction test. The following guarana extracts were tested: water extract, crude extract (with acetone-water) and semi-purified extract. All extracts showed antioxidant activity. In vitro-tests with Streptococcus mutans showed that the guarana extracts could be used to prevent bacterial dental plaque.
