Lipid metabolism in trained rats: effect of guarana (Paullinia cupana Mart.) supplementation. Clinical Nutrition. 2005 December;24(6):1019-28 Guarana is widely consumed by athletes because of its claimed fat burning activity and positive effect on physical activity. This study investigated the effect of complete and decaffeinated guarana extracts supplementation on the fat metabolism of rats. By using decaffeinated extract the researchers tried to find whether possible effects were caused by caffeine alone or by other phytochemicals in guarana. They found that only whole guarana extract had an influence on lipid metabolism. Therefore caffeine is the only phytochemical responsible for the observed beneficial effects.
