Beneficial effect of gaurana on cognitive improvements

Improved cognitive performance in human volunteers following administration of guarana (Paullinia cupana) extract: comparison and interaction with Panax ginseng.
Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior. 2004 November;79(3):401-11
The researchers determined the psychoactive effects (cognitive function and subjective mood) of guarana, ginseng and their combination on 28 humans. Previous studies have shown that ginseng extracts improves cognitive performance. The researchers found that all three treatments improved performance of attention tasks and sentence verification tasks. Only the treatment with guarana alone resulted in somewhat reduced accuracy. Treatment with guarana and a combination of guarana and ginseng serial subtraction task performance. Other phytochemicals than caffeine are probably responsible for the observed effects, given the low intake of caffeine through the guarana extract.
