Anti-depressant effect of guarana extract

Effect of lyophilized extracts from guaranį seeds [Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke] on behavioral profiles in rats.
Phytotherapy Research. 2007 June;21(6):531-5
This study investigated the effect of guarana extracts on the behavior of rats. The anti-anxiety, anti-depressant and motor stimulant activity was measured by observing rats in different tests (plus maze, forced swimming and open field). The researchers found that the crude guarana extract and the extract with the highest polyphenol content had anti-depressant effects, similar to the antidepressant drug imipramine. Caffeine normally increase the locomotor activity, but this effect was not observed with the guarana extract. They concluded that a long term oral administration of crude guarana extract and polyphenol rich extract produces an antidepressant-like effect on rats.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-dose evaluation of the acute behavioural effects of guaranį in humans.
Journal of Psychopharmacology. 2007 January;21(1):65-70
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different dosages of standardized guarana extract on the behavior of humans. The researchers found that the guarana improved memory, alert and content mood ratings. They also suggest that the observed effects cannot be attributed to caffeine alone.
